Adult Education
Temple Beth Emeth believes in lifelong learning and has a wide variety of engaging adult education programming. Programs are led by clergy members, staff and lay leaders, and range from formal study sessions, informal discussions, preparing for the holidays and more. If you're looking for a book club, to learn more about the Talmud, to delve into Jewish prayer, or you're interested in a retreat to connect with your fellow congregants, we have a program to meet your needs. And don't forget to check out our Affinity Groups for social programming and volunteer opportunities!
Monday – Thursday | 9:15 a.m. | Zoom
Friday at 9:15 a.m. | Zoom and in-person
Do you like to start your day with a few moments of blessing and gratitude? Temple Beth Emeth's Morning Blessings is an opportunity to gather in community as Jews for a brief service welcoming the day through prayer, song and inspirational readings. Begun by Rabbi Whinston during the COVID lockdown and sustained by Rabbi Whinston and Cantor Annie Rose for the past 4 years, Morning Blessings is now facilitated by lay leaders.
We meet on Zoom at 9:15 am Monday-Friday for fifteen to twenty minutes. Morning Blessings provides an opportunity to express our gratitude for the day through Jewish prayer, to offer Mi Shebeirach prayers for those in our lives needing healing, or to say Kaddish in a Reform Jewish setting when we are in mourning. Some people come to say hello and connect. On Fridays, we are HYBRID, meeting in the Chapel at TBE and on Zoom with an optional run to a local coffee shop after for schmoozing. Whatever your reason, Morning Blessings is here for you.
Mondays | 12:00-1:30 p.m. hybrid or 7:30-9:00 p.m. Zoom
Explore topics for several weeks at a time, developing a deeper understanding of Jewish texts and building relationships with fellow learners.
Upcoming courses in this new year include:
- American Jews and the Labor Movement: In this 3-week mini-series led by Rabbi Chelsea, we will explore both religious and historical texts on to workers' rights and the relationship of Jews to the American Labor Movement. The first class will focus on traditional sacred sources; the second on the living conditions and early organizing efforts of Jewish immigrants in the US; the third on the appeal and rejection of socialist and communist ideologies. This class is offered twice each day; please register for the one you intend to attend most often, though you are welcome to change the method and time that you come in any given week.
- Psalms and (P)spirituality: While a small number of psalms are woven into our prayer services, few of us have engaged broadly or deeply with the Book of Psalms. Join Rabbi Chelsea in an exploration of this piece of our shared canon, with an emphasis on forging a personal relationship to such poetry today. This 4-part series is also wonderful preparation for TBE’s Shabbaton with Rabbi Jade Sank Ross November 14th & 15th and will be based in her new book, To You I Call: Psalms Throughout Our Lives. While not a requirement for the course, you may wish to purchase a copy of the book through the CCAR Press.
- Judith: A Hanukkah Heroine: Many people know her name, but few of us have read Judith’s story in its entirety. Beauty, trickery, underdogs, decapitation—the Book of Judith has it all! Join Rabbi Chelsea for an opportunity to better understand this apocryphal text, to engage in discussion with fellow learners, and to inject fascination and feminism into Hanukkah.
Every Tuesday | 7:00 p.m. | in-person and Zoom
