Rabbi Josh Whinston

This week’s Torah portion, Sh’lach lecha, provides the context for the Israelites' 40-year journey through the desert. God instructs Moses to send scouts from each tribe to explore the Promised Land. Ten scouts return with reports of insurmountable obstacles, while two believe they can conquer the land. The Israelites choose to listen to the ten scouts, and as a result, their journey extends from a few weeks to 40 years. This period marks a generational shift as the generation of slaves dies off, allowing a liberated people to enter the Promised Land. One of the many lessons from this portion is the power of showing up.

The scouts' words held more weight than the Israelites' imaginations and beliefs. Although their report was not what God or Moses desired, it resonated with the people because they understood the value of first-hand experience. In my own life, both personal and professional, I have learned that showing up often makes all the difference.

Since October 7th, I have visited Israel once, and I am about to go again. This coming fall, you will also have the chance to show up in Israel with other members of TBE. From Saturday, October 26th through Tuesday, November 5th, join me and 14 other TBE members as we spend time supporting Israelis in distress. This trip won’t be a typical tour; we will spend only a day or two sightseeing. Instead, we will volunteer by packing food, making meals, and picking produce to help our family in Israel.

If you are interested in joining us, email me to be included in future updates. We have some funds available to assist with the trip's cost, which is likely around $3,500. If there is more interest than the 15 available spots, we will consider planning another trip. I hope you, too, can show up for Israelis in need.
